Metro Animal Services encourages all pet and livestock owners to be prepared for disasters such as floods, fires, and earthquakes. Planning ahead can save lives.

For Pets

Before a Disaster:

  • ID & Microchip: Keep ID tags and licenses current; consider microchipping.

  • Training: Train pets to enter carriers or respond to recall commands.

  • Secure Housing: Place cages/tanks on low, stable surfaces; secure latches.

  • Pet First Aid Kit: Include bandages, scissors, peroxide, meds, etc.

  • Neighbor Plan: Share emergency contacts and coordinate care.

During/After a Disaster:

  • Evacuation: Most shelters don't allow pets—plan for pet-friendly options.

  • If Left Behind (Not Advised): Leave food/water, and a visible note with pet details. Never cage or tie up pets.

  • Lost Pets: Call MAS at (307) 235-8398. Post flyers and search regularly.

  • Found Pets: Report to MAS. Avoid handling sick/injured animals.

Pet Disaster Kit Checklist:
Crate, leash, 7-day food/water supply, bowls, meds, vet records, litter box, manual can opener, trash bags, emergency contacts.

For Livestock

Before a Disaster:

  • Fire Safety: Clear brush, clean gutters, secure hay and fuel.

  • Identification: Use branding, tattoos, or microchips; keep records safe.

  • Evacuation Plan: Assign roles, post plans, and keep access open.

  • Disaster Kit: Include ladders, buckets, hose, halters, flashlight, and radio.

During/After a Disaster:

  • Fires: Don’t enter burning buildings. Prep trailers, open gates, move animals.

  • Earthquakes: Check for damage, comfort animals, and seek help if injured.

  • Floods: Relocate animals/feed to high ground early.

  • If Left Behind: Leave food, water, and a posted notice with animal count. Never confine.

  • Lost/Found Animals: Contact MAS at (307) 235-8398. Post flyers and avoid handling unknown animals.

Be a Community Resource

  • Coordinate with neighbors and your vet.

  • Keep emergency contacts updated.

  • Consider forming a neighborhood animal response team.
