Dog Safety Tips for Children

To help prevent dog bites and ensure safe interactions, children should follow these important guidelines:

When Not to Approach a Dog

    • Never approach a dog that is sleeping, eating, chewing a toy/bone, or caring for puppies.

    • Avoid dogs that are barking, growling, or showing signs of fear.

    • Do not pet unfamiliar dogs without first asking the owner's permission.

How to Safely Greet a Dog

    • If the guardian gives permission, allow the dog to sniff a closed hand first.

    • Avoid petting the top of the head; instead, gently pet the dog’s shoulders or chest.

    Special Situations

    • Do not try to pet dogs behind fences or inside cars—they may be protective of their space.

    • If you see a loose dog without an owner, do not approach it. Tell an adult immediately.

What to Do If a Loose Dog Approaches

    • Do not run or scream. Stay calm.

    • Stand still like a tree—feet together, arms by your side, eyes looking down.

    • Once the dog loses interest, slowly back away.

If Knocked Over by a Dog

    • Curl into a ball with knees to chest and fingers interlocked behind the neck.

    • Stay quiet and still until the dog leaves.

    If a Dog Attacks

    • Do not try to outrun the dog.

    • Use anything you’re carrying (jacket, backpack, bicycle) to put between you and the dog—this may redirect the dog’s attention.
